Established approach – plaster cast modelling with manual correction
New 3D scan in seconds under manual correction.
BellwaldTEC is developing a new and versatile digital measuring system for recording body surfaces.
The measurement principle is based on the determination of the spatial position in a magnetic field generated near the patient.
By using a magnetic field, the orthopedist’s corrective hands are invisible to our scanning textile.
When used in orthopedic technology, the corrective position of the limbs can be recorded under palpation, since the corrective hands of the orthopedists are invisible to magnetic fields.
Our scanning textile offers the following advantages:

Our 3D scanning textile is based on the principle of determining a spatial position within a defined magnetic field. The textile contains hundreds of sensors for measuring the field strength. Based on these measured values, the position in space can be calculated and a complete 3D data representation (STL file) is obtained in a matter of seconds.
The required magnetic fields are very weak. Even weaker than those of the magnets on a fridge at home. The technology also does not generate radio waves and has no ionizing effect on body cells.
The magnetic fields can still penetrate our body. That is why the corrective hands of the orthopedist are invisible to our sensors.
The integration of hundreds of magnetic field sensors in the textile is a challenge. For this reason, we work closely and intensively with strong partners who work out the ideal solution with us, so that we can quickly and optimally meet the needs of our customers with our innovative product.
BellwaldTEC GmbH, a FHNW spin-off, is a Swiss start-up company that develops new body scanners for orthopedic solutions. The core technology is based on a scanning textile that was developed at the FHNW School of Life Sciences in Muttenz.
The inventors are Prof. Dr. Joris Pascal, Thomas Ruepp and Ralf Schumacher.

The name Ruepp has always been a guarantee for innovation in orthopedics. Ernst Ruepp, Thomas Ruepp’s grandfather, worked as an orthopedist in Nice, Paris and Brussels in the early 1920s before founding his own company in Basel in 1926.
The company Basler Orthopädie René Ruepp AG is now run by Thomas daughter Florence in the fourth generation.
Thomas Ruepp developed the idea of a measuring stocking as early as 1991 and was way ahead of his time.
However, the textile only became technically feasible much later, from the beginning of 2016, when Thomas Ruepp and Ralf Schumacher approached Prof. Joris Pascal (FHNW), a specialist in microelectronics and magnetic field sensors, who laid the technological foundations for the scanning textile.
As part of research and development work, together with the FHNW, the first prototypes were built and the functioning of the measuring principle could be demonstrated.
BellwaldTEC is planning to enter the market in the first quarter 2026.
